The differences between fiberglass and polyethylene vary according to functionality. In MATIN, we work both polyethylene and fiberglass. We consider that the performance offered by these materials is very useful in many applications. let's see the properties of each material;
As for its characteristics, polyethylene (PE) is chemically the simplest polymer. It is one of the most common plastics because of its low price and simplicity in its manufacture. Which generates the production of approximately 60 million tons per year around the world. It is chemically inert. We get it from the polymerization of ethylene (of chemical formula CH 2 = CH 2 and called ethene by the IUPAC), from which its name derives. Different polymerization reactions can produce this polymer, such as free radical polymerization, anionic polymerization, ion coordination polymerization, or cationic polymerization. Each of these reaction mechanisms produces a different polyethylene. Its characteristics, once we form the piece, give it optimum performance in any situation; weathering, indoor, high temperature, bumps, etc.
Fiberglass is a material composed of thin glass filaments agglomerated with resins. These, when intertwined, give rise to a strong structure. We normally use it to reinforce other materials. The resin is a fiberglass component that makes it resistant to chemical erosion and the environment. In addition, because of its filaments, it is a lightweight material. Like polyethylene, it does not require major maintenance. Besides all this, we usually use fiberglass as both thermal and electrical insulator.
- Fiberglass and polyethylene applications have a very long service life. Therefore, both materials have good performance. - Fiberglass, because of its filaments, is light and flexible. However, we can give the desired shape or geometries to polyethylene. - Both materials are strong against impacts. Polyethylene offers better shock resistance. Fiberglass resists sharp objects better. - The two materials resist outdoors. Polyethylene shows better results in more aggressive conditions. Therefore, functionality depends, we recommend one material or another.
