What is SMC?
Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) is sheet material for hot press mould. The SMC process is the most important process technology for fiber reinforced polymers today. SMC is a mixture of polymer resin, fillers, fiber reinforcement, catalysts, pigment and stabilizers, release agents, and thickeners. Manufacture of SMC is a continuous in-line process. The material is sheathed both top and bottom with a polyethylene or nylon plastic film to prevent auto-adhesion. The resin paste is spread uniformly onto the bottom film. Chopped glass fibers are randomly deposited onto the paste. The top film is introduced and the sandwich is rolled into a pre-determined thickness. The sheet is allowed to mature for 48 hours before shipment. Heat represents one of the most difficult environments for a polymer. The cross-link reaction of covalent bonds that takes place when polyester thermoset is molded gives SMC compounds a distinct structural advantage over alternative materials, such as thermoplastic, at elevated temperatures. Relaxation or creep failure is far less in a chemically reacted thermoset composite than a “cooled to form” (cold pressed/hand lay-up) thermoplastic materials.
What are FRP and GRP tanks? FRP Panel Type Water Storage Tank system is designed for every need, with unit sizes from 1m³ to 10,000m³ (2,500,000 USG). The panel tank is a modular system, enabling a tank of any desired size and shape to be constructed. Panel sizes are from 0.5 to 2.0 meters in height and could be combined to create a tank up to 4m high. Formed from hot pressed GRP, and available in gray color. All units offer the option of integral insulation. Tanks can be installed at ground level, on top of or inside buildings, or on steel towers. Typical applications include municipalities, industrial users, agriculture, aquaculture, reservoirs, hotels, hospitals, offices, private homes and other building complexes, as well as high volume long-term storage where regular piped supplies may not be available. The unique advantages of the FRP pure water storage system derive from the design (modular panels designed for optimum functional efficiency), the material & process (hot pressed GRP), and the packaging (kit). The use of sophisticated modern computer aided design techniques determined the optimum shape for the tank panels. Below are some of the many advantages: 1.Prevention of leakage Convex base panels, with exclusive synthetic rubber sealant, create a self sealing characteristic, which enhances as water pressure increases. 2.Ease of handling, installation, or modification Components for a complete tank up to 18m³ may be packed onto a single pallet for efficient transport. Individual panels may be carried to the final assembly point, with no lifting equipment required. Assembly is straightforward, requiring no special skills or equipment. Previously installed tanks may be extended with additional panels, or relocated. 3.Unlimited sizes and configuration With the appropriate combination from the 13 different panel designs, units of any capacity from 1 to 10,000m³ or over may be constructed, in a configuration to respect any existing site restrictions (maximum height not exceeding 4m). 4.Easy maintenance The design and material specifications of the tanks ensure that routine maintenance requirements are minimal. The exclusive design of the base panels ensures total free drainage, eliminating any possibility of residue from static water or from cleaning materials. By installing a partition, tanks may be cleaned one compartment at a time without interrupting supply. Underground Fuel Storage Tanks The same advantages of FRP for chemical storage tanks apply to underground fuel storage tanks with the corrosion resistance of FRP taking particular prominence. Highly cross-linked terephthalic resins are particularly successful in containing gasoline and gasoline blends and resisting the corrosion that results from water condensation inside the tank and corrosion from ground water on the exterior of the tank. Secondary containment systems are easily incorporated into the fabrication of FRP tank shells. And with only 70% of designed performance it can meet the requirement of daily usage under various load conditions including the occupancy loads, wind loads and seismic loads. The GRP Water Tank can be expanded to different sizes subject to the site space available by combining the three basic units.
Bottom Drainage System The panel combination allows the water to be drained off rapidly and completely. The special convex base panel is so designed that any increase in water pressure as the volume of water increases is distributed to the panel joints evenly.
